Juzoor (Roots) Explorers Arab Family Festival

Science of Henna Workshop

As part of the Juzoor (Roots) Explorers Arab Family Festival at Natural History Museum, I collaborated with scientist and artist Hania Tayara to co-facilitate a science-art henna workshop exploring the connections between science, culture and creativity. The festival was created to celebrate the Arab community’s relationships with the natural world through a programme of creative and educational workshops and talks.

Project Focus

  • Exploring the history and cultural significance of henna

  • Discovering the science behind henna stains through chromatography experiments

  • Looking at the natural organic motifs that are often used in henna designs

  • Creating accessible pathways into science and art

  • Celebrating Arab heritage and community knowledge

  • Creating an inclusive space for families to learn and experiment

My Role

  • Designing and leading the creative henna element of the workshop

  • Sharing knowledge about the history, cultural significance and uses of henna

  • Supporting participants to create their own henna designs

  • Facilitating conversations around heritage, identity and creativity

  • Creating an accessible and welcoming experience for families and participants of different ages

Collaboration

  • Hania Tayara

  • Nuzhat Tabassum

  • The Natural History Museum

  • Festival organisers and community partners

Outcome

The workshop showed how science, heritage and art could exist together. Through henna, play and conversation, participants were able to explore connections between science, nature, culture and identity in a creative way.
