FIND ME - Dementia Friendly Zine Workshop

Creative Wellbeing, Dementia & Participatory Arts

As part of the launch of the FIND ME (Family Interventions in Dementia Mental Health Environments) exhibition, I was invited by Faye Watson to develop and facilitate a dementia-friendly zine workshop. The event celebrated the exhibition while creating a welcoming space for participants to explore zine making.

Project Focus:

  • Creative wellbeing through zine making

  • Accessible arts activities for people living with dementia

  • Reflection through drawing, collage and storytelling

  • Creating spaces for conversation and connection

  • Exploring what brings us joy in everyday life

My Role

Working alongside Faye Watson, I facilitated a relaxed and accessible workshop using a simple eight-page zine-making technique.

My role included:

  • Designing and facilitating the workshop

  • Supporting participants through the creative process

  • Encouraging conversation and creative exploration

  • Creating an inclusive and welcoming environment

  • Adapting activities to suit different participants and abilities

Creative Process

Participants used drawing, collage, stickers, words and pattern to create personal zines inspired by the theme ‘What brings you joy?’ We reflected on the following themes:

  • Nature and animals

  • Pets

  • Poetry

  • Fashion

  • Museums

  • Music

  • Cooking

  • Favourite memories and places

We also shared conversations about the role creativity can play in supporting the wellbeing of people living with dementia, family carers and those working within dementia care.

Collaboration

This workshop was delivered in collaboration with:

  • FIND ME (Family Interventions in Dementia Mental Health Environments)

  • Faye Watson

The project brought together creative facilitation, health research and lived experience to create an accessible and supportive environment centred on creativity and care.

Outcome

The workshop created a gentle friendly space where participants could connect through making, conversation and shared experiences. It demonstrated how creative activities such as zine making can encourage self-expression, start conversations and support wellbeing within dementia-friendly settings.
